MEREDITH CRAWFORD (viola) currently holds the chair of Assistant Principal Viola in Orange County’s Pacific Symphony. At the age of 22 (before the completion of her senior year at Oberlin Conservatory), she won her first orchestral audition, and consequentially a seat with the Pacific Symphony — moving up into her current post in 2012. Additionally, she has been performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 2010. Meredith is the first prize winner of several competitions, including the Ohio Viola Society Competition, the Skokie Valley Symphony Annual Young Artist Competition, and the Oberlin Conservatory Competition. While an undergraduate, she was selected to represent Oberlin Conservatory in the Kennedy Center’s 5th Anniversary Conservatory Project, where she performed with the internationally acclaimed trio Time for Three.
Meredith began her viola studies with Michael Zaretsky of the Boston Symphony while attending the Walnut Hill School for Fine and Performing Arts. She continued her studies with Peter Slowik at Oberlin Conservatory, graduating in 2009 with both a BM in Viola performance and a BA in English Literature. During her final year, she was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda honor society, receiving the prestigious Prize for Musicianship. During her years at Oberlin, Crawford sat principal in three separate Oberlin ensembles, and was selected to participate in special performances in Carnegie Hall and Walt Disney Concert Hall as well as in recordings with Grammy-winning recording label Telarc.
She has attended such summer programs as the Yellow Barn Young Artist Program, Oberlin in Italy, the Sarasota Music Festival, and Kneisel Hall. In 2005, she toured Venezuela and Brazil with New England Conservatory’s Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and performed throughout southern Maine in 2007 with the Cicada Chamber Players, founded by New York Philharmonic bassist Bill Blossom. Meredith has spent the past few summers teaching, performing, and coaching chamber music at the Eastern Music Festival. She currently resides in Costa Mesa.
